Simple Ways to Serve

We are getting geared up for this summer’s VBS’s in Costa Rica. We are in need of several things. If you have them around the house, you can turn them into the office or Mrs. Dyster anytime and they would be greatly appreciated!

  • Toiletry items  – shampoo, conditioner, soap, wash rags, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, etc. – many times these are found at hotels, motels if you travel a lot.
  • Happy Meal toys – stuffed animals, toys, not books or games
  • Sources for wooden people – little 3” cutouts
  • Zoo animal decor – particularly anything “Panda”

We have our Cinco de Mayo luncheon coming up on Thursday, May 5. All you can eat for $5.00, including dessert and drink! Plan to take advantage of this! Parents, if you want to participate, please let us know so we will have enough food!

Also, we are sponsoring the annual Costa Rica Talent Show on Friday, May 6. More details to come, but please be thinking about participating! This is a major fundraiser for our supplies and a great way to showcase the talent of East Hill!

Third Grade Pioneers

Last week we heard from Mrs. Laguens about her time with her third-graders on the prairie. Mrs. Laguens explained that the third grade has just completed a two-chapter study about expanding the USA beyond the original thirteen colonies. “We started with the Louisiana Purchase and the travels of Lewis and Clark.  Then we looked at the wagon trains heading west to settle the prairie, to teach the Indians about Jesus Christ, and to be part of the Gold Rush in California. We kept a pioneer journal, and built log cabins out of milk cartons and popcicle sticks.” The study ended with Pioneer Day, on which the boys and girls in her class came dressed as a famous American they had read about from that time period. “We spent the day in a pioneer one-room schoolhouse, doing our lessons on slates with chalk, making various prairie crafts (weaving, tin punch art, Indian bracelets, hornbooks, whittling bars of soap, and stenciling a bandana), and eating snacks from the prairie (cornbread, biscuits and apple butter, popcorn with maple syrup, and pumpkin bread). It was a memorable day!”

Middle School Tennis Talent

While we often feature student accomplishments and school events that take place on-campus during the school year, occasionally a student makes the news in a significant way off campus. Toward the end of the fall semester, EHCS 7th-grader Chris Ephron earned a No. 9 ranking in the state and a No. 36 ranking in the nation for his age group. He also finished in the round of 16 at the Junior Orange Bowl in Miami. The Junior Orange Bowl is an international tennis tournament, and it is by invitation only.

Chris recently had the opportunity to share a little bit about himself with the Pensacola News Journal, and he was featured in an article by James Secola. You can find out more about him through the hyperlink above, and you can check out his stats at the Tennis Recruiting Network.

Board Selection in Progress!

Is there someone you would like to nominate to serve on the EHCS Board of Trustees?  There is still time to submit a name.  The deadline for nominations has now been extended to Friday, Feb 18th, 2011.

What is the role of the Board of Trustees? The Board of Trustees is charged with protecting the philosophy and mission of the school in accordance with the By-Laws. The Board makes major policy and financial decisions and the Headmaster carries out the day-to-day operations of the school.  Board members meet with the Headmaster the 4th Tuesday night of each month.

What is the composition of the Board? The Board strives to have a balanced representation of grade level, denominational preference and talents in order to make up its membership.  Board members serve a 3-year term.  Neither school employees nor spouses of full-time employees are eligible to serve on the Board according to the By-Laws.

How do I nominate someone? Make sure you obtain permission from the person you want to nominate.  Next, submit his or her name, address, and phone number to Dr. Wood on the following form.  Then, the current Board of Trustees will interview and pray about the nominees.  Finally, a slate of nominees will be presented for a vote at the Annual State of the School Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 29th.
