God’s blessings are apparent in every aspect of our school- academics, athletics, student leadership, community outreach, and spiritual emphasis. The following is a final portion from Dr. Wood’s State of the School address.

When we talk about our school as a partnership, we are talking about a working, enjoyable relationship between the school,  families, and alumni.  I am excited about where East Hill has been, and I am even more excited about where East Hill is going.  Re-enrollment is going well, and we are getting daily phone calls, giving daily tours, and conducting interviews for new families.  We are currently working on an academic strategic plan for the entire campus, and a technology plan.

Mr. Witter and myself are brainstorming in our planning meetings and developing new classes, new approaches to current classes, and new opportunities for professional development for our teachers.  East Hill has overcome the battles of the past.  We are committed to taking the time now to not only survive but to move forward.  East Hill Christian School is going to step out and be the school that God wants us to be- spiritually, academically, athletically.  We are in this for His purpose and it is time for us to follow His plan and succeed.  I cannot wait to see what God has in store for the future of our school- through His grace!

God’s blessings are apparent in every aspect of our school- academics, athletics, student leadership, community outreach, and spiritual emphasis. The following is a selection from Dr. Wood’s State of the School address, highlighting a few of our accomplishments this year.

As with every year at EHCS, we have had a very active leadership program. Middle school students were represented by the Student Council, and a strong Student Government Association and Student Leadership Institute program continued to give high school students opportunities for involvement and development. Teachers received further training at the Association of Christian Schools International Annual Conference in Birmingham, Alabama.  Thank you for your prayers for safe travel and great learning opportunities!

In relation to this leadership development, the Student Council and Student Government Association have been active in community outreach.  The two organizations are have planned for EHCS’s role in the national One Day Without Shoes event.  The two organizations are heading up a Tom’s Shoes drive, where students are able to purchase a pair of shoes that they decorate, and then a second pair of shoes is shipped to a Third World Country.  Another mission project that the upper grades have been involved in is collecting Coins for Costa Rica to support the mission work that is done  by our students in the summer months to hold two consecutive Vacation Bible Schools.  We have also participated in filling Christmas stockings for local foster children, and the response was overwhelming.  Eighth grade alone filled enough stockings to meet the goal that we had put in place for the entire school.

This has been a very busy and successful year for East Hill academically, and we are even now making plans to move forward next year.  We have participated in several academic competitions- from the spelling bee, annual elementary science fair and author study, and middle school history fair.  Next year we will be holding two separate fairs- a history fair in the fall that will include middle and high school students, and a science fair in the spring for elementary and middle school students.    Our high school students were recognized for their citizenship by the local Civitan Club, awarded Presidential scholarships, and attending the state science fair and regional spelling bee.

What an amazing group of young men and women our seniors are!  Several of them have been at East Hill since kindergarten.  They are a very talented group of students, and it is going to be hard to not see their faces in the halls next year.  Our seniors have received a number of scholarships, and it is truly wonderful to see how successful they have been- to watch them go through this metamorphosis as they are about to close another chapter of their lives.

In athletics, our cross country did an outstanding job this season, and our volleyball team had a great re-building season.  Our boys soccer team won the champion award for the West Region of Panhandle Christian Conference and the entire Panhandle Christian Conference.  In addition, they came in third in the National Association of Christian Athletes Soccer Tournament in Dayton, Tennessee.  Our competition cheerleading squad won second place at the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders Competition in Orlando.  Our winter sports also had a successful season.  Our varsity boys had a great run, and our junior varsity team received third place for the West Region of the Panhandle Christian Conference.  Our middle school boys did an outstanding job, and our middle school junior varsity came in second in the West Florida Christian Conference.  Right now our spring sports are well under way.  We currently have tennis, baseball, and softball going on, and the players are doing an amazing job at representing our school well!

Elementary students grades K5-5th participated in our annual EHCS Science Fair.  Each grade researched, wrote a paper, and designed a display to provide pictures and results on a themed subject. Kindergarten students turned their classroom into a solar system and investigated a different heavenly body for their research.  Students in 1st grade were assigned an animal in the rain forest to study.  Posters were brought in with their reports and were very well made.  Mrs. Wenzel’s 2nd grade coop studied dinosaurs and each worked on models of skeletons and imprints.

Third grade has been studying space and brought in models of the moon and reports on moon landings by NASA.  (I told them I was a little disappointed that the moon is really not made out of cheese- I think they thought I was weird.)  Moving on to 4th grade-the models and body posters were done well as students have been studying the body and the different systems that function together to make our bodies work.

Some models were working displays of different organs.  The 5th grade all had tests and results to capture with their projects.  They ranged from fizz in Coke™ and Pepsi ™, to the affect of preservatives on apples, to foods that pet guinea pigs will eat.  All were very enlightening and the evening was well attended by parents and friends.  Congratulations to all students for a great fair!!

Board Selection in Progress!

Is there someone you would like to nominate to serve on the EHCS Board of Trustees?  There is still time to submit a name.  The deadline for nominations has now been extended to Friday, Feb 18th, 2011.

What is the role of the Board of Trustees? The Board of Trustees is charged with protecting the philosophy and mission of the school in accordance with the By-Laws. The Board makes major policy and financial decisions and the Headmaster carries out the day-to-day operations of the school.  Board members meet with the Headmaster the 4th Tuesday night of each month.

What is the composition of the Board? The Board strives to have a balanced representation of grade level, denominational preference and talents in order to make up its membership.  Board members serve a 3-year term.  Neither school employees nor spouses of full-time employees are eligible to serve on the Board according to the By-Laws.

How do I nominate someone? Make sure you obtain permission from the person you want to nominate.  Next, submit his or her name, address, and phone number to Dr. Wood on the following form.  Then, the current Board of Trustees will interview and pray about the nominees.  Finally, a slate of nominees will be presented for a vote at the Annual State of the School Meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 29th.

Homecoming 2011

Our 2011 Homecoming Week was a huge success!  Spirit Week kicked off our festivities getting the whole school involved with “Opposites Attract” themed dress-up days.  On Tuesday, students came to school as either young or old. Wednesday’s opposite was night and day which let us all roll out of bed and come to school in our PJ’s.  Nerds and Jocks roamed the campus on Thursday. Friday each class dressed as their chosen opposites attract theme.

Homecoming Pep Rally was a blast! Our pep squad, led by Tammy Stuck, showed off their talent. The Varsity Girls’, under the coaching of Brianna Smith, performed a portion of the routine that earned them second place at FCC Nationals. An all-squads routine was enjoyed by the crowd.  All basketball teams were introduced as was the homecoming court.  In the end, our alumni judges, Kristina Trail, Michael Mooney, Missy Pitts, Cameron Fink and Cheyenne Clevenger awarded the spirit stick to eighth grade for middle school and sophomores took down the seniors for the high school.

Our homecoming basketball games had us on the edge of our seats. Junior Varsity pulled out a last minute win over Aletheia beating them 36-35. Before the Varsity game, the 2011 Homecoming court was presented.  Representatives were as follows:  Ninth grade – Clayton Smith and Meaghan Doyle; tenth grade – Riana Lonquist and Tucker Ward; eleventh grade – Christopher Wood and Kristen Hughes; Seniors – Nick Colello and Jasmine Dortch, Kevin Esch and Michelle Ward, Thomas McGhee and Kayla Brooks.  Thomas McGhee was crowned Homecoming King and Kayla Brooks was crowned Queen.   Our Varsity team took the court next and gave a great effort but in the end lost a hard fought battle.  During Halftime our entire cheerleading program performed their Cheerleading Extravaganza.   Wrapping up the night’s festivities was the Alumni basketball game where many of our former EHCS basketball players took on the varsity team showed us all they still had game.

We topped our week off Saturday with our Student Government sponsored Homecoming Dance. The dance was held at First City Church and featured black and white décor and food as a continuation of the Opposites Attract theme. Thank you SGA for putting on a great event!

*Special thanks to Mr. Crum for officiating our Presentation of Homecoming Court and to Mrs. Trail for preparing such a lovely display of East Hill history.

East Hill Christian School hosted its third annual fall festival on October 8th.  It was an amazing afternoon full of great activities!  There were over 25 exciting activities, with some of our more popular items being the “Jail and Bail”, “Pie in the Face”, and the favorite “Dunk Tank”.  This year students got to nominate who they wanted to pie and dunk, and those nominated were excellent sports and suffered through the cold water and chocolate flavored whipped cream with smiles on their faces.  The Parent Teacher Fellowship did a great job of organizing this event, and it was enjoyed by more than 250 people.  The fall festival is one of our important fall fundraisers here at East Hill, and this year was a success, bringing in a little over $4,000!

The elementary school participated in its first Pajama Drive for Families First Network. Their goal was to bring in 50 new pairs of pajamas for children in foster care. By the last day, students brought in over 80 new pairs of pj’s for area children. The MS/HS continues to bring in new and gently used clothing for teens in foster care. At over 200 items donated, we’ve been able to meet the needs of children and teenagers of a variety of ages. Please continue to give to this need.

God is good- all the time!

Summer Camps and Competitions

The 2010 school year may have ended, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of things to do at East Hill this summer. Mrs. Jane Brobst has been busily teaching an art camp for elementary school students. Students learn to make bracelets, picture frames, and pencil holders decorated with shells. In addition, students learn to tie dye and paint with watercolors. Mrs. Brobst, who teaches elementary art during the school year, gives students prizes for their work. She has students attending from as far away as Jay.

But art students aren’t the only ones staying busy on campus this summer. Around fourteen girls have been hard at work, practicing cheer routines in preparation for camp at the end of July. The practices, led by Ms. Brianna Smith, prepare the girls to compete on the campus of Columbus State University in Georgia, which is where the cheer camp is located.

Finally, nine East Hill and home school students practice basketball skills with Coach Terrance Williams. Coach T has prepared his team to compete in the summer league against schools such as Pensacola High School as well as West Florida Tech, Gulf Breeze, and Washington high schools. Their summer record stands at 5-0, with several games won in overtime or by a single point in the fourth quarter. Their latest game (on June 23rd) was against Tate, in which the final score was 47-30. The summer league culminates in a tournament in mid-July.

Renovations Underway!

This spring PTF purchased round tables and chairs as well as several serving tables.   The purchase was made in honor of all the teachers and faculty during Teacher Appreciation week and helps complete the plan for a lunchroom makeover.

The tables will also be used for banquets and other school activities.  The lunchroom will now be more user-friendly as we have tables that can completely breakdown and be removed when needed.  The room has also been freshly painted!  Stop by and see the makeover if you haven’t already.

The elementary campus will also be welcoming new additions, including gutters to eliminate flooding in walkways on rainy days, shade sails to provide cooler areas on sunny days, and a fresh coat of paint for the class and office hallways. There will be new sod laid around the elementary buildings, and new playground equipment is being ordered, including a swing set, curvy balance beam, tether ball, and covered sandbox.

Following Student Government and First Priority’s bathroom renovation project, we are planning to lay new tile in the middle/high school breezeway bathrooms.  Miscellaneous additions include new signage around campus and Set-in-Stone bricks being placed around the eagle statue in the front of the campus. Stay tuned for additional updates on renovation projects!
