God’s blessings are apparent in every aspect of our school- academics, athletics, student leadership, community outreach, and spiritual emphasis. The following is a final portion from Dr. Wood’s State of the School address.

When we talk about our school as a partnership, we are talking about a working, enjoyable relationship between the school,  families, and alumni.  I am excited about where East Hill has been, and I am even more excited about where East Hill is going.  Re-enrollment is going well, and we are getting daily phone calls, giving daily tours, and conducting interviews for new families.  We are currently working on an academic strategic plan for the entire campus, and a technology plan.

Mr. Witter and myself are brainstorming in our planning meetings and developing new classes, new approaches to current classes, and new opportunities for professional development for our teachers.  East Hill has overcome the battles of the past.  We are committed to taking the time now to not only survive but to move forward.  East Hill Christian School is going to step out and be the school that God wants us to be- spiritually, academically, athletically.  We are in this for His purpose and it is time for us to follow His plan and succeed.  I cannot wait to see what God has in store for the future of our school- through His grace!

Jessica Clements, EHCS Class of 2007, was recently recognized on the University of Florida Gator Foundation Spotlight for serving as the 2010 Homecoming Chair.  We are so proud of her!!! The university website reads:

This week, Jessica Clements will see the results of a year of organizing and preparation. As Homecoming general chair, she has overseen the work of 60 directors, 250 assistant directors and more than 1,000 staff members.

Homecoming is composed of multiple events ranging from Soulfest, a multicultural festival with the winning student performance playing at Gator Growl, to the parade, which draws more than 100,000 spectators. Each event is sponsored by Florida Blue Key and is under Clements’ guidance and direction.

“It’s been amazing planning an experience that touches so many people, from students to faculty to alumni … There is an event for everyone.”

As a junior, Clements was director of the VIP Reception, a function after Gator Growl for esteemed alumni, faculty and Gator Growl performers. Not only did she carry out a beautiful event, but the catering and entertainment for 800 guests also generated $12,000 in revenue. She also was an assistant director in 2008 and staff member in 2007, making her a part of Homecoming planning for the last four years.

Her experiences led her to take on the role of Homecoming general chair, where she is in charge of a $1 million budget, a week of school-spirited celebrations and welcoming back alumni to their alma mater.

“Coordinating 60 directors toward one common goal can at times seem daunting, but the group that I have been working with this year is unlike any staff I have seen before,” Clements said. “We have all worked so well together and along the way become good friends. I look forward to one day returning to UF as an alumna and seeing some of these same familiar faces that I have been working with on the 2010 Homecoming.”

The Friday of Homecoming week is so rooted in tradition that the university cancels classes to showcase these events. The day begins with Gator Gallop, a two-mile fun run down University Avenue preceding the parade, which starts at noon. Local businesses, high school marching bands and student organizations all participate to show their Gator pride. The night culminates with Gator Growl, where the 2010 Homecoming King and Queen will be announced in front of 40,000 attendees.

“Homecoming has been a tradition here since 1907,” Clements said, “and having the opportunity to direct these events has made me appreciate being a Gator all the more.”

East Hill Christian School Cheerleaders recently returned from the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders Camp held July 19-22 in Columbus, GA at Columbus State University.  They brought home a first place Camp Champs Trophy.  Overall nine squads from the Southeast competed and EHCS beat North Florida Christian-Tallahassee in the finals.  Junior Heather Pitts received an All Star Award for Outstanding Leadership and Superior Skill Level.  The squad also won two stunt competitions.  The win also entitles the squad to compete at Nationals in Orlando, Florida in December.  The squad is coached by Brianna Smith.  Assistant Coaches are Britt Cosby and Tammy Stuck.

2009 EHCS graduate Natalie Burke recently found herself the topic of a Pensacola News Journal article. While a student at East Hill, Natalie was heavily involved in student life and saw a lot of time on the basketball court. She now plays basketball for the Pensacola State College Pirates, and the News Journal took some time to write about Natalie during an all-star game. The News Journal quotes Pirates coach Chanda Rigsby as saying of Natalie: “She has the most incredible story. She is one of the most phenomenal people I have ever been around in my life. Every day she gives 100 percent with a selfless attitude. Natalie is great testament to how willpower and a great attitude will propel you in life….She’s a Christian girl and she really has a different push to her than the average person.”
